How did the E-Painting happen?

I thought it might be fun to give you the history of the E-Painting.  I started it a few years ago.  It's beginning was humble.  I would send out a single image attached to an email with no description of the painting.  It went out to various friends and galleries. Gradually people began requesting the e-painting that had been passed back and forth from friend to friend.

In those days I wasn't very savvy about the internet.  I had a webmaster who never changed the site for me so the same E-Painting would be up for months at a time.  I decided to use a service to send out the image, and started to add a bit of information to the mail out.

That service was very unreliable, so I switched to another service and expanded the format to include multiple images. About that time, one of my subscribers suggested that I start telling stories about my life as an artist and include photos of myself and others I paint with.

At Thanksgiving the same year, I included my recipe for Thanksgiving turkey.  Some of you may know that I was a chef and caterer when my children were young.  Of course I was doing art festivals and cooking too to get by, along with other part time gigs as a housekeeper and mail sorter.

The turkey recipe prompted other subscribers to request a weekly recipe, so that was added on too.

I started adding information about area art clubs and organizations as a public service.

It also occurred to me that it might be nice to offer advice for other painters and collectors, so that became a regular feature too.

I discovered that the html version was a problem for some subscribers because their spam filters would not let them see images.  When I had this web site redesigned by my brilliant graphic designer Gaby Zapien, gaby@gzapien.com,

I decided it would be better for everyone, for me to send out a simple email link to my subscribers each time I redo the E-Painting. Now you can see it on this page all the time.

Now I have many sponsors who offer discounts to my subscribers.  It is important to note that I do not charge my sponsors any fees on the e-painting. I receive nothing except the same discount they offer my subscribers.

They are very generous to offer special discounts to my subscribers.

So, that's the story of the E-Painting and I have had the unexpected benefit of meeting and enjoying correspondence

with so many great people through the E-Painting.

Thank you for following my career and for being my friend.

Artists Share Warmth

I have started a fun project for myself.  I wanted something to do that is not related to my work, a hobby.  I have been doing sort of crochet, though it is really just chain stitches row after row.  I love doing it while I watch my favorite shows late at night.  I decided to make blankets to give to people in need at schools and homeless shelters.  Perhaps those of you who knit or crochet would do the same. If you don't do either, send me some yarn or drop it off at my studio and I'll do it for you.  I can use partial skeins of any color. I make mine with medium sized cotton yarn. It is strong and warm. You quilters out there can do the same.  I made my first one for me, and it is warm and soft. It is pretty ugly, full of knots and missed stitches but it feels great at night.  People who are cold won't care. My daughter Sara, bless her generous heart, has donated about 20 skeins to the project already. Sara is a hair stylist at the wonderful Strand Salon downtown in Gainesville. She see first hand the misery that homeless people endure.  There are so many school children living without proper clothing and bedding too.  I am going to get a few blankets done over the summer before winter comes.

Annual Hot Dog Picnic Studio Party

June 12, 2008

10 AM - 8PM

I'm beginning to plan my annual Hot Dog Picnic studio party at the studio.  This year's menu will include hot dogs, baked beans , potato salad, a vegetable selection and Brownies . We will top it off with pink lemonade or Iced tea.

This year's party will be interactive. I will have a paint station set up for visitors. You will be able to do a miniature painting or make your own art puzzle to take home.

I'm featuring my gouache miniatures and "The Heart of Florida" paintings from Evinston at this year's picnic and the "sale bin" will be full.

Of course, I will donate a gift certificate worth 100.00 toward art from my studio to a lucky winner using my guest book entries from the party.

It pays to come to my studio parties . I can't wait to see you there!!!

My world has revolved around two commissioned pieces this week.

Winter

They have been a wonderful challenge and experience for me.  Working with two verticals this tall was unusual .

This Week's Recipe

Fried Green Tomatoes

3 medium, firm green tomatoes
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup milk
2 beaten eggs
2/3 cup self rising cornmeal
1/4 cup olive oil or butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt and pepper. Let tomato slices stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, place flour, milk, eggs, and cornmeal in separate shallow dishes.

2 Heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil in a skillet on medium heat. Dip tomato slices in milk, then flour, then eggs, then corn meal. In the skillet, fry half of the coated tomato slices at a time, for 4-6 minutes on each side or until brown. As you cook the rest of the tomatoes, add olive oil as needed. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

This is your opportunity to paint on a Florida Heritage Farm in North Central Florida in historical Evinston Florida.  We will meet at the Wood Swink Post Office , the oldest post office and country store in Florida. Take a step back in time and enjoy painting the huge Live Oaks and tall graceful Sable palms with lovely views of Orange Lake. There are beautiful cattle on the land as well and it is completely private so there will be no distractions.

The closest restaurant is in Micanopy at Pearl Country Store. It is just about 5 miles away and that is where the closest available bathroom facility is located. We will take a break for lunch and bathroom breaks as needed.  Believe me, these minor inconveniences are nothing compared to the beauty  and opportunity of painting this landscape. It is my personal favorite location to paint in North Florida.

Camping is available at nearby Paynes Prairie State Park and there are several fish camps in the McIntosh- Orange Lake area which offer clean 2 bedroom trailers for 55.00 per night.  South US 441 has many motels available as well ranging from 50.00-125.00 per night

We will focus on the big three of painting, Values, Composition and color mixing, as related to trees.

Web sites of Interest

www.ebates.com

Have I told you about Ebates? My friend artist Jean Hood Jean Levert Hood Texas Hill Country Painter sent me there. it is a discount portal for all kinds of shopping stores, hundreds of them.  I have already made a few bucks in rebates by using that site to click through to other sites where I shop. It doesn't cost anything. Just sign up and try to remember to use it each time you shop instead of going directly to the sites where you shop. One of the sites is Dick Blick for art supplies so I'm saving some money by going through the ebate site to get to DB.

I've been doing some drawing. I should do it every day but I get busy and slack off :>(  I'm going to make an effort to be more productive with drawing this summer.

For Artists:

Bartering

Have you thought about trading your art for services? During these hard economic times, it may be something to consider.  I have managed to barter a painting in trade for a week at a beach front condo this fall.  I will also be trading care for my dog with my veterinarian the next time he needs it.  I didn't even have to look for this. They suggested it to me.

The important element to this is that you make it very clear to each other what services will be covered by the trade, and dates. If it is with a friend you trust, it's not quite as important to be formal about it but with merchants, it will be very important to be crystal clear in all issues and have it in writing. You want to avoid any misunderstanding or hard feelings.

I'm thinking this is a good idea for artists to consider.
